Non-medical life insurance is designed to protect people who are not able to qualify for traditional life insurance products.

People considering non-medical life insurance may have already been declined coverage or they may simply have a poor medical history and are not candidates for protection from traditional insurers.

Others may suffer from “white coat fever”, meaning that they have a fear of needles or are uncomfortable with the medical testing process.

Traditional life insurance is a “fully medically underwritten product”, meaning that that before an offer is made to the client by the insurer, a full assessment of the person’s medical health is completed. This entails a visit from a nurse and answering medical questions that include family history. Blood and urine is also collected for testing and often a report from the client’s doctor will be ordered. The process can take 60 days or more to complete from start to finish.

Applying for non-medical life insurance only requires answering a series of short questions - no needles or medicals are required, the coverage can be approved in days, and the policy can be received shortly thereafter. The amounts of coverage per company are lower than with traditional insurance, for example,  $150,000 for term life and $75,000 for permanent (also called whole life), but for the 30 year old who has a congenital heart defect or is a cancer survivor with a young family, the protection is welcome.

Someone who requires more protection than one company is prepared to offer is free to apply to other companies offering non-medical life insurance protection. This results in a total amount of coverage that hopefully meets the needs of the insured.

The premiums are higher than traditional life insurance but not unaffordable. For example a 30-year-old male non-smoker can expect to pay $31.32 per month for $150,000 of twenty-year non-medical term life insurance. The cost for a traditional fully underwritten life insurance from one major insurer is $19.22 per month for the same person.

Another popular life insurance product is “guaranteed issue” life insurance, often referred to as “final expenses insurance”. These are permanent life insurance products that require no underwriting and very few questions but are only available to people over 40 years of age. The protection amounts are low: $25,000 maximum, and the premiums are higher, reflecting the higher risk.

Non-medical life insurance is available to people from age 20 to 70.

Non-medical life insurance products fill the gap between the “fully underwritten” traditional life insurance and the final expense “guaranteed issue” life insurance.

Life insurance helps people protect their loved ones from financial loss by planning for the unexpected.
